The Phantom of the Opera

Live improvisation to the classic silent horror film of 1925.

Performed by Martin Baker, winner of first prize in the Improvisation Competition (Tournemire Prize) at the St Albans International Organ Festival in 1997.

This macabre film, directed by Rupert Julian, is based on French author Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l’opéra.

Lon Chaney is the deformed Phantom who haunts the dark catacombs of Paris Opera House. He falls in love with an aspiring opera singer Christine, played by Mary Philbin…

This breathtaking masterpiece of early cinema remains astonishing nearly a century after its creation.
